About COMPASS PDF Print E-mail

The COMPASS Project came about as the result of an extensive business needs analysis conducted by the District with the assistance of Apriant (an outside consultant).  The study was conducted from October 2005 through February 2006.  The COMPASS Steering Committee is proud to announce the Board of Education (BOE) approval of the purchase of LAWSON Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software and implementation services.  Leaders in human resources and finance departments are enthusiastic to partner with LAWSON.  The district has made arrangements to purchase the hardware and software necessary for the project; members of the Information Systems department obtained training in July 2009; and members of the finance department attended their training in August 2009.  Should you have any questions regarding the COMPASS project, please contact Lisa Kelly, Project Manager at 720-554-4572, or Scott Schilz, Project Manager, LAWSON Enterprise.

What is ERP?

ERP is an acronym for Enterprise Resource Planning.  ERP is a way to integrate the data and processes of an organization into one single system.  Typically, ERP systems will have many components including hardware and software, in order to achieve integration.  Most ERP systems use a unified databse to store data for various functions found throughout the organization.  An ERP system supports most of the business system such as financials, budget, projects, human resources and work order systems.

CCSD Project Description

Implement a new integrated administrative system to replace the existing legacy applications, redesign and optimize the district's business processes, exploit the capabilities of the new technologies, and provide access to the information needed to support the district's decision makers.

Cherry Creek School District's administrative systems (Accounting, Finance, Purchasing, Human Resources, and Payroll) are over 20 years old.  These systems are outdated, inefficient, and increasingly difficult to maintain.  They are incapable of providing the information that is required to make informed business decisions and to respond to new regulatory requirements.  These systems have forced the district to continue to use outdated, labor intensive, manual business processes. Converting to a new system will take two to three years and until then; the district is running on an unsupported version of the mainframe, several key employees are retiring, it is extremely difficult to find employees with the necessary skills, and support from the software vendor continues to decline. We have reached the point where continuing to operate with these systems is exposing the district to unacceptable risks.

It is paramount to the success of the Cherry Creek Schools' COMPASS project to build a capacity for change and maximize the potential for a successful transition to a new enterprise resource planning system.  Research indicates that the number one obstacle to success for a major project is employee resistance and ineffective management of the people side of change.
